National Police Memorial
Things To Do Canberra, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory
The National Police Memorial honours Australian and South West Pacific police officers who have been killed in the line of duty or have died as a result of their service since the inception of policing in Australia.
Officially dedicated on National Police Remembrance Day, 29 September 2006, the Memorial acknowledges the unique role of police and the inherent risks they face in the course of their duties.
Each evening from dusk, subdued lighting brings a reflective atmosphere to the site. More than 700 individually lit touchstones honour each fallen officer, while the rear of the memorial wall is illuminated with the image of St Michael, the Patron Saint of Policing.
Every year on 29 September, the Memorial hosts a commemorative service marking National Police Remembrance Day—a time to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by police officers. The Australian Federal Police coordinate the event, which includes a ceremonial march of officers crossing the Kings Avenue Bridge from AFP Headquarters (Edmund Barton Building), with formal proceedings typically commencing at 4:30pm.
Members of the public are warmly invited and encouraged to attend.
