Jerrabomberra Wetlands

National Parks and Reserves

Jerrabomberra Wetlands, located just minutes from Canberra’s city centre, is a 260-hectare nature reserve renowned for its diverse wildlife and tranquil landscapes. Created in the 1960s when Lake Burley Griffin was formed, the wetlands now provide a vital refuge for over 170 bird species, including migratory birds like Latham’s Snipe, as well as native creatures such as rakali (water-rats), platypuses, turtles, and frogs.

Visitors can explore a network of easy, flat walking tracks, including Kelly’s Loop, Billabong Walk, and Woodland Loop, with boardwalks, bird hides, and interpretive signage that highlight the area’s natural and cultural heritage. Managed by ACT Parks and the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, the reserve supports conservation programs, educational activities, and volunteer groups dedicated to preserving its unique ecosystems.

Ideal for birdwatchers, families, and those seeking a peaceful escape, Jerrabomberra Wetlands offers a rare chance to experience nature and wildlife up close, right on Canberra’s doorstep.
