Chifley Home and Education Centre

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Located on a peaceful residential street in Bathurst is one of Australia’s most personal museums — the former home of Prime Minister Ben Chifley and his wife, Elizabeth.

Whether you’re interested in Australian politics or simply want to experience a step back in time, this distinctive museum and Education Centre offers an intimate look at the Chifleys’ way of life. It provides a fascinating window into everyday life in the 1940s, showcasing original furnishings, kitchenware, and personal items dating back to when the Chifleys first moved in, in 1914.

This home weathered the challenges of the Great Depression and wartime. From ration cards still left on the kitchen table to Mrs. Chifley’s soap saver in the kitchen, 10 Busby Street stands in stark contrast to grand residences like The Lodge or Kirribilli House — and that’s what makes it so captivating.
