Pro Hart Gallery

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Few places will give you a sense of the true character of Broken Hill than the Pro Hart Gallery.

Known for his depictions of working-class and outback life, Pro Hart was an internationally renowned artist who worked across many forms and here you can see a wide range of his wonderful drawings, etchings and sculptures.

You’ll also get to learn more about the life of this artisan, painter, collector, inventor, father, friend and husband, who was awarded a state funeral upon his death in 2006.

A former miner, Hart was also a performance artist who experimented endlessly with new forms of expression, a sculptor who loved metal and stone, and an inventor extraordinaire who loved tinkering in his back shed.

All of this is on show at the gallery, where the lush colours of Hart’s landscape paintings will give you a disquieting sense of the wide spaces and ancient qualities of the outback.
