Heaton State Forest, part of the Watagan Mountains, is a beautiful forest encompassing spectacular lookouts that showcase views over the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie regions.

Heaton’s three lookouts – McLean, Hunter, and Heaton lookouts – offer outstanding coastal and mountain views. Watagan HQ camping area, an old forest worker campsite, is also available for picnics. And of course, being State Forest, you can bring your dog and your visit is free.

While visiting Heaton State Forest, why not explore the Watagans and visit Olney State Forest too? The Pines Picnic Area is a magnificent spot for a picnic, a former pine forest, this area is shaded with a pine needle carpet underfoot.
