Young Historical Museum

Galleries, Museums and Collections

The Young Historical Museum is located within the former Young Public School building, built in 1883. It preserves and shares the stories of people from the early days of Burrangong and Lambing Flat through to the development of Young and the surrounding district as it is today.

Displays include ‘From Burrangong to Young: The Legacy of Gold’. This room includes the NSW State Heritage listed “Roll Up Banner” carried during the 1861 Lambing Flat riots, Chinese petitions for compensation, as well as other gold rush memorabilia.

Other highlights include the prayer book made by bushranger Frank Gardiner for his lover Catherine Brown in 1865, a collection from world-renowned glass artist Helmut Hiebl (1943-2013). You also can’t miss the 19th and 20th-century local shop, school, agricultural and war memorabilia; as well as needlework and wedding dresses.
