Located at Sandy Hollow’s Pocket Park is a striking carved horse’s head—an artwork that captures both the spirit of the Upper Hunter and the skill of local chainsaw sculptor Mark Ray. Created to enhance the local park and offer a point of connection for visitors and locals, the sculpture is one of many pieces by Mark dotted throughout the region.

Mark took up chainsaw carving at the age of 50, drawing on a lifelong love of drawing and a family heritage rich in creativity. Inspired by his grandmother’s finely detailed wildlife illustrations, he now brings timber to life with bold, expressive forms carved freehand—no templates, just an image in his mind.

He works only with sustainably sourced wood, collaborating with local arborists and never cutting down trees for his art. Once the stump is selected and squared off, he carves from the top down, leaving the base intact to support the final piece. An electric grinder is sometimes used to smooth and refine surfaces.
