Calala Cottage Museum

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Designed and built by Philip Gidley King in 1875 (Tamworth’s first Mayor in 1876), the cottage is furnished with items mainly from the late Victorian period.

Bequests from notable Tamworth families enhance the exhibits. These include collections of portraits, photographs, furnishings and clothing.

The kitchen is a fully equipped late 1800s-style kitchen, complete with a bread oven, giving an insight into the pre-electric and gas period.

Enjoy a guided tour around the Museum. Please allow an hour or more. The guides are happy to answer your questions and look forward to hearing your stories too.

School groups can visit at times to suit their schedule. Hundreds of school children are welcomed every year and are happy to provide retired schoolteachers as guides to enhance the experience.

Tour groups can be accommodated outside of normal opening times. Please book. Light refreshments or a light lunch can be provided. Please advise of special requirements.

There are small steps inside some of the buildings as well as on entry to some, except to Calala Cottage. There is no Cafe on site, though groups may be catered to by prior arrangement with the Tour Director.
