Upper Allyn River Fungi Foray

Community Event

12 Apr 2026 Once Only Event

Join the Hunter Branch of the National Parks Association, in association with the Paterson Allyn Williams Science & Ideas Hub, on their annual Fungi Foray at the Upper Allyn River.

Participants learn about fungi and undertake a community survey in the picturesque Upper Allyn Valley. This area in Chichester State Forest is located about one hour from Dungog and two hours from Newcastle, and forms part of a proposed extension to Barrington Tops National Park. The Foray is led by experienced fungi finders, and includes a short walk and brief talk about fungi.

The Upper Allyn has been described by experts as a ‘fungi hotspot’ of great significance worthy of conservation in a national park.

The day is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and anyone with an interest is invited to attend. Children are welcome. Participants need to bring suitable clothing, footwear and food, and be prepared for some walking off tracks. The weather may be wet, and you should be prepared for leeches.

Note that access to the area requires crossing fords that are subject to flooding. Final arrangements will be emailed to registered participants one or two days beforehand.
