In glorious colour – rarely seen large abstract paintings from the personal archive of groundbreaking colour field artist Arthur Wicks.
Arthur Wicks is a formidable contemporary artist, practicing across painting, sculpture, performance and print-making. Born in Sydney 1937, Wicks has been a resident of Wagga Wagga for over 40 years.
Following early studies in science at the University of Sydney, Arthur went on to study Fine Arts at the Australian National University. His first solo exhibition was held at the Nundah Galleries in Canberra in 1966. Thereafter, Wicks travelled and studied in Europe and New York. He was awarded a French Government Scholarship in 1967 to study printmaking with renowned British printmaker Stanley Hayter at his Paris studio. Wicks returned to Australia in the mid-1980s, producing art, teaching and exhibiting in metropolitan and regional galleries.
This exhibition celebrates Arthur’s exceptional, colour-field abstract paintings, produced on the eve of the founding of Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, 50 years ago.
