WWII Catalina Base – Doctors Gully

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Explore one of Darwin’s hidden heritage gems at Doctors Gully—home to a wartime staging ground that supported critical Royal Australian Air Force operations in the Top End. Set within the iconic Aquascene property, this evolving precinct invites visitors to uncover layers of history from World War II through to Darwin’s early infrastructure.

During World War II, Doctors Gully served as a strategic staging ground and vital supply point for the famed “Black Cat” Squadron—Catalina flying boats tasked with long-range reconnaissance, mine-laying missions, and covert operations across the Pacific. While few physical remains of the Catalina Base exist today, the historical significance of the site as part of this elite squadron’s northern network remains compelling.

Visitors can also explore two original WWII oil tanks that once fueled military efforts, as well as the lush Peels Well Rainforest Walk. This path leads to the original water source for the Darwin township, combining military, natural, and civic history in a single immersive experience. The Doctors Gully WWII Precinct is growing into a key waypoint on Darwin’s military tourism map, with interpretive displays and curated content in development.
