Nitmiluk National Park

National Parks and Reserves

There are many ways to experience the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge and the diverse landscapes of Nitmiluk National Park. You can walk, swim, ride, paddle, cruise or fly.

Hike across the sandstone plateau on trails ranging from short one-hour walks to the epic 62 kilometre Jatbula Trail, which passes through monsoon rainforest, stone country, upland swamps, woodlands and rivers. Mountain bike trails also offer a thrilling way to explore the terrain.

Canoe hire is available at the gorge, or you can bring your own. Join a scenic cruise through the towering gorge walls or take to the skies with a helicopter flight for a bird’s-eye view.

From December to April, high river flows may limit swimming and canoeing, but scenic cruises operate year-round and adapt to the seasons. Swimming and canoeing are generally best between June and November, beyond the second gorge.

Don’t miss Leliyn (Edith Falls), another highlight of Nitmiluk, located off the Stuart Highway about 45 kilometres north of Katherine. It offers a stunning swimming spot, walking trails and campgrounds.

Be sure to stop by the Nitmiluk Centre, located near the main gorge entrance. The Centre features visitor information, the Alice Mitchell Gallery, cultural and interpretive displays, a café, souvenir shop and a tour booking desk.

Camping and walking permits, especially for the popular Jatbula Trail, should be booked online well in advance.
