Pine Creek Railway Heritage Precinct

The Darwin to Pine Creek railway was completed in 1889. The original layout of the Pine Creek station yard included a main line with three siding lops. an engine turning triangle and a spur line to a coal stage, ash pit and engine running shed.

The Railway station built in the 1880’s when it was extended to Pine Creek during the Gold Rush and was the Southern Terminus, of the line until 1914.

The Station operated until 1976, and during WW2 Pine Creek was one of the four dispersal bases on the North Australian Railway with up to 147 services a week.

The Station precinct is the most complete remaining example of infrastructure associated with the North Australia Railway.

The Precinct is managed and was restored by the NT National Trust and houses a display of the history of the North Australian Railway line, this station is one of the four Railway Heritage precincts’ still in existence, i.e. Adelaide River, Pine Creek, Katherine and Larrimah.

The Railway Precinct also contains both goods and baggage shed and engine and carriage displays, and a corrugated iron railway employees’ residence, built in 1880s, and remains unaltered except for the corrugated iron push-out shutters on the verandah, originally woven bamboo was used.
