Miners’ Memorial

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Step into the heart of Australia’s gold rush history at the Charters Towers Miners’ Memorial Walk, a moving experience that brings the stories of the Charters Towers Goldfields to life.

Life on the goldfields was tough and often dangerous. This thoughtfully designed memorial honours the miners who lost their lives in mines, mills and quarries, and shines a light on the human stories behind the region’s remarkable gold rush legacy.

Starting at Stubley Street and linking seamlessly with the Mosman Street walking track, an elevated boardwalk leads visitors to a safe viewing platform overlooking the historic Wyndham No. 3 mine shaft. Here, miners once descended by candlelight to extract gold deep underground. Replica poppet head structures, interpretive signage and storytelling panels reveal the courage, hardship and determination of early mining life.

As day turns to night, subtle lighting transforms the walk into a striking after-dark experience, offering a completely different perspective and atmosphere that many visitors find unforgettable.

Whether you’re a history lover, travelling family, student group or simply curious to explore, the Miners’ Memorial Walk offers a meaningful and memorable reason to stop, reflect and discover Charters Towers’ pioneering past.
