Gorgonia Hole

Natural Attractions

Some pretty coral gardens can be explored around Heron Island, but one of the island’s most colourful sites is Gorgonia Hole. This site has a deep cut in the reef wall which is decorated with beautiful gorgonian fans. These wonderful fans are often seen feeding when a current is running, their extended polyps waiting to snatch tiny particles of food.

At Gorgonia Hole divers can explore gutters, walls, ledges and caves in depths from 12 metres to 20 metres. This site is a good location to encounter green turtles, stingrays, batfish, barramundi cod, red emperors, trevally and batfish. Numerous members of the groper family are also found at Gorgonia Hole, from small coral cod to larger brown-spotted gropers.
