Yorke Valley Dam Historical Site

Located just 5 km south of Maitland at the corner of Spencer Highway and Cunningham Road, the Yorke Valley Dam Historical Site is a fascinating roadside stop that explores the vital story of water on Yorke Peninsula.

Surrounded by sea yet short on fresh water, Yorke Peninsula has long faced challenges in securing a reliable supply. With limited underground water and no major rivers or reservoirs, most water is collected from rainfall or piped in from elsewhere.

The Yorke Valley Dam Project shares how generations have met this challenge — through an engaging outdoor display of equipment once used for dam building, water pumping, and land management. It also acknowledges the Narungga People who are the traditional owners of the land and how they cared for the water.

Initiated by the property’s owners in 2017 and supported by Yorke Peninsula Council, government and local community groups, the site officially opened in 2020 as a Water Resource Information Centre. A steering committee, including members from local service clubs and the Maitland Progress Association, helped bring this vision to life.

Interpretive signage, relics from the past, and a walk to a scenic lookout invite visitors to reflect on the ingenuity and resilience of the region’s communities. Whether you’re passing through or exploring local history, the Yorke Valley Dam Historical Site is well worth a visit.
