The Post and Rail
Food and Drink Penola, Wattle Range, South Australia
The Post and Rail is a multifaceted cooking, gardening, and art school, as well as a friendly cafe and providore, located in the historic heart of Penola.
The Post and Rail occupies the heritage-listed Cobb & Co building. This charming site is situated adjacent to the iconic Petticoat Lane and the Mary MacKillop Church, placing it at the centre of the region’s rich colonial and spiritual history.
Owned and operated by Cindy Bunt—an enthusiastic cook, author, gardener, and artist—The Post and Rail offers a unique “home-made” atmosphere where everything is crafted from scratch. Visitors can explore a retail nursery filled with plants grown onsite or browse Cindy’s latest lifestyle books, such as Fall in Love with Baking.
The establishment is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am – 4pm. Guests can enjoy:
Seasonal Dining: A menu featuring freshly baked scones, Devonshire tea, and hearty dishes like the famous “Manwich”
Hands-on Workshops: Diverse classes ranging from Sourdough for Beginners and Vietnamese Feasts to Seascape Art Workshops.
Providore Goods: On-site-made preserves, including tomato chutney and strawberry jam, available for purchase.
Classes can be booked directly through thepostandrail.com.au, offering a perfect destination for foodies and creative souls alike.
