Lake Benalla Fishway

Agri, Mining and Industry

Lake Benalla fishway is in place to improve the native fish migration in the Goulburn Broken Catchment.

The vertical fishway or fishladders as they are sometimes known, allows fish to swim upstream an downstream past barriers. It is also a way to protect fish from predators like humans and birds and also allows light to enter the fishway.

The fish are attracted to the water flow and turbulence at the base of the fishway. A series of compartments slow the waterflow, allowing fish to rest on their way through.

The fishway is a joint project undertaken by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Authority, in conjunction with the Dept of Natural Resources and Environment to improve native fish migration in the Goulburn Broken Catchment
