Bocara Cultural Walking Tours

Visitors to Nelson are invited on an Aboriginal walking tour to remember in far south-west Victoria.

Walk on Mirring (Country) and learn about Gunditjmara history and culture from Traditional Owner Judy McDonald.

On this small group tour, you will be taken back in time to learn about the history and traditions of the Gunditjmara clan groups who lived here prior to colonisation.

You’ll see and touch some native foods and botanicals growing in this area and learn about significant sites, practices and customs.

You’ll hear about the impact of colonisation and learn about life in Nelson today.

The content of tours is tailored to the interests of each group and is suitable for all knowledge levels. This is a culturally safe tour.

Bocara is the Gunditjmara/Dhauwurd Wurrung language name for the Glenelg River.

Gunditjmara Mirring is bounded by Bocara (Glenelg River) in the West, Nyamat Mirring (Sea Country – Southern Ocean) in the south, Wannon River across to Bunong (Mustons Creek) in the North to Tooram (Hopkins River) in the East.

There are four recognised distinct types of Gunditjmara Mirring: Tungatt Mirring (Stone Country), Nyamat Mirring (Sea Country), Bocara Woorowarook Mirring (River Forest Country) and Woorowarook Mirring (Forest Country).
