Old Star of the West Gold Mine

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

For a four-wheel drive (4WD) or hiking adventure take a trip into the old Star of The West Gold Mine past Jamieson towards Kevington.

This was the richest local gold mine, having produced 33,000 ounces of gold from 1863 to 1918. It is situated at the head of Mack’s Creek near the township of Kevington, which is further downstream. The reef system the mine is on extended from Jamieson to Walhalla in Gippsland. Today you will see evidence of mullock heaps, adits, shafts and furnaces.

Turn onto the 4WD track opposite Bocking on the Mansfield – Woods Point Road to find the car park 3km along, then walk 1km from there.

A warning – Keep to the track at all times as dangerous conditions exist and there are unmarked shafts in the area.
