Honouring Arnold Playle

Landmarks and Buildings

This expansive monochrome mural is located close to the heart of the High Country town of Corryong, both geographically and historically.

It celebrates early Upper Murray resident Arnold Playle, whose glass plate negative photography documented much of the region’s early life. The subjects of his photographs varied widely—from events and gatherings to farm and town life. His images of bullock drays hauling wagons and the style of his camera were used as inspiration and appear in the mural alongside a detailed portrait of Playle himself.

The detail in this captivating mural invites time and contemplation, encouraging viewers to imagine what life was like in Playle’s era. The site is especially significant as it remains at the heart of Corryong today, just as it was in Playle’s time.
