Whale Watching in Portland

Community Event

31 Oct 2026 Annual Event

The whales are back in Portland for another season. Spotting one of nature’s most magnificent wild mammals is a truly memorable experience in Australia’s Whale capital, Portland.

From May to October, Southern Right Whales are the main attraction during their migration season. They visit the warmer waters of southern Australia on their annual journey from the deep Southern Ocean to mate and calve. They are easily distinguished by the large, white bumps (callosities) on the top and sides of their heads. The Humpback Whales also pass by Portland’s coast while travelling between their tropical breeding and Antarctic feeding areas. Look for them playing and feeding as they pass through. If you are lucky, the Orcas and Killer Whales often frequent Portland and Cape Bridgewater bays, particularly in winter.

In summer and autumn, Pygmy Blue Whales can be seen when ocean currents bring krill to the coast.

Make sure you never miss an opportunity to spot a whale. If the whale flag is flying outside the Portland Visitor Information Centre, there is a great chance visitors will catch a glimpse of whales that day. Call into the Portland Visitor Information Centre to get information on the latest sighting locations. Check the Whalemail Facebook page for community sighting updates.
