Beechworth Wine Region

Wineries

High on the historic slopes of North East Victoria, the Beechworth Wine Region is shaped by time, terroir, and transformation. Its elevated plateau, mineral-rich hillsides, and ancient granite soils—rising from 290 to 810 metres—create ideal conditions for cool-climate viticulture.

Long before vines, the Dhudhuroa people travelled through this landscape to trade and gather. The Gold Rush later brought Anglo-Saxon and Chinese settlers who formed early townships, followed by post-war European migrants whose agricultural traditions continue to influence the region’s artisanal culture.

While vines were first planted in 1856, Beechworth’s modern identity emerged in the 1980s. Early pioneers established Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir as regional benchmarks, earning national acclaim. A new generation has since broadened the varietal landscape with Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, and other Mediterranean styles, each matched to carefully selected sites.

Every vineyard is planted with purpose, producing wines that are expressive, refined, and built to age. Collaboration among established and emerging vignerons drives constant improvement. With only a handful of cellar doors—many by appointment—Beechworth offers a personal, immersive tasting experience. Collectors prize its limited-release wines, some available only through long-standing waitlists. The annual Spring Tasting brings producers together in a celebration of community and craft.

From precise Chardonnays to bold, textural reds, every Beechworth wine reflects a place where innovation meets terroir.
