Albany’s Historic Whaling Station

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Visit the only complete whaling station tourism attraction in the world!

Albany’s Historic Whaling Station was the last operating station in Australia and provides a fascinating insight into Albany’s colourful past. A state-heritage-listed site, and the 2025 WA Tourist Attraction & Cultural Tourism Gold awards winner, the Whaling Station is an engaging and educational experience for all ages to enjoy.

Start your adventure and find yourself immersed in the sights and sounds of the whaling industry. Climb aboard the Cheynes IV, the world’s only preserved Whalechaser ship. View short films within the converted whale oil tanks. Discover the giant blue whale skeleton, and be amazed at the world-renowned precious scrimshaw art. Explore the extensive museum exhibits filled with authentic, whaling artefacts and memorabilia, and then take in the relaxing view from the café overlooking one of Albany’s most picturesque bays.

Albany is located in the Great Southern region, part of Australia’s South West – a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot that is home to thousands of native plant species. Many of these unique species can be discovered in the Regional Wildflower Garden, adjoining the Whaling Station. Enjoy free barbecues in the garden and meet a friendly collection of native animals at the Australian Wildlife Park, nestled within the Wildflower Garden precinct. Entry to the Wildflower Garden and Wildlife Park is included with your Whaling Station admission.
