On The Verandah Creative Adventures
Things To Do Darlington, Mundaring, Western Australia
Welcome to On The Verandah, where they curate unforgettable journeys for those who find their greatest inspiration in the natural world. Since 2013, they have specialised in providing unique, residential experiences in the heart of the Kimberley, tailored specifically for artists, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts.
Their mission is to bridge the gap between creative expression and environmental immersion. While they remain the Kimberley’s premier destination for residential art workshops, their offerings extend deep into the region’s diverse ecosystems. Whether you are capturing the light on a canvas or spotting rare species through a lens, their itineraries are designed to foster a profound connection with the landscape.
They take you off the beaten path to unspoilt, undiscovered locations, living like a local on a remote cattle station. This is a place where you can witness the incredible birdlife and ancient beauty of Australia’s Kimberley region in their most authentic state.
With only a few exclusive experiences each year and a commitment to small, intimate groups, they have earned a reputation for delivering a genuine slice of Kimberley life. With safety and personalised service as their top priorities, all that’s left for you to do is relax, create, and immerse yourself in the wild.

With a focus on playful experimentation rather than polished outcomes, the week is designed to spark new ideas, deepen your creative voice, and connect you to the land in a truly meaningful way. Expect to sketch beneath boab trees, respond to the colours and textures of the bush, and use foraged tools to make surprising, instinctive marks.
Daily sessions include time to explore, reflect, and develop your work using a range of materials and processes, with demonstrations by Debbie. Some painting experience will be useful, but the retreat is open to all who are ready to explore, take creative risks, and be inspired by place. All levels of artist welcome.
On The Verandah is a small, family-run, accredited Western Australia tourism business specialising in Kimberley art workshops since 2013. When you join an On The Verandah trip you can leave the meal prep, organising and driving to them. Simply paint, learn and enjoy the food and conversation!
Debbie Mackinnon is an Australian landscape painter known for her abstracted style, capturing light, weather and colour. She “brings the ‘outside in” and challenges realism by blending observed elements and multiple moments.
