National Parks and Reserves

Just 20 minutes from the heart of Perth, the Lake Gwelup Story Trail offers a truly unique and enriching experience for visitors of all ages. This 2.4-kilometre loop trail is more than just a scenic walk, it’s a journey through storytelling, culture, and nature. Designed to be accessible and family-friendly, the trail takes about 90 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace, making it perfect for a relaxed morning or afternoon outing.

As you meander along the lakeside path, you’ll discover a series of vibrant story panels that weave an imaginative tale inspired by local wildlife and the rich cultural heritage of the area. The trail also features stunning ground-based artworks by Nyoongar artists Emily Rose and David Jones, created in collaboration with Jahne Rees. These pieces incorporate traditional symbols and elements that reflect the deep connection between the Nyoongar people and the land, offering insights into Indigenous knowledge and history.

Lake Gwelup itself is a haven for biodiversity, with 20 hectares of wetlands, 35 hectares of bushland, and 20 hectares of parkland. Birdwatchers, nature lovers, and curious travellers will find plenty to enjoy, from peaceful picnic spots to a viewing platform overlooking the lake. Whether you’re seeking cultural enrichment or a tranquil escape, the Lake Gwelup Story Trail is a hidden gem worth exploring.
