Guildford Colonial Gaol
Things To Do Guildford, Swan, Western Australia
The Swan Guildford Historical Society manages a museum that depicts law and order in the early days of the Swan River Colony.
The Colonial Gaol in Meadow Street was built in stages between 1841 and 1867. It is a fine example of Colonial architecture and is listed on the State Register of Heritage Places. Tours of the Gaol are held every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 1.30pm
Their most famous inmate at the Gaol was bushranger Moondyne Joe, caught sampling the produce at Houghton Winery two years after escaping from Fremantle Prison. He was temporarily held at the Gaol, awaiting his return to Fremantle.
They are conveniently located next to the Swan Valley Visitor Centre, less than a 10-minute stroll from Guildford Train Station and close to Guildford’s iconic pubs, cafes, vintage boutiques, other historic sites and walking trails.
Continue the experience with a visit to Taylor’s Cottage, a small weatherboard two room dwelling, once the home of Edward Taylor and his large family.
