Diversion Dam

Agri, Mining and Industry

Kununurra’s Diversion Dam is one of the region’s most iconic landmarks and a key component of the Ord Irrigation Scheme.

Built to harness and regulate the massive flow of water from Lake Argyle into the Ord River, the dam features 20 radial gates set within a concrete framework and spillway structure. These gates control water levels in Lake Kununurra/Ord River, allowing gravity-fed channels to supply farms north of town, while pumped systems service the Packsaddle Plains area to the south.

Located just 6 kilometres west of Kununurra along the Victoria Highway, the Diversion Dam also creates Lake Kununurra above it – a popular destination for boating, cruising, fishing, jet-skiing, and other water-based recreation.

A viewing area on the western side of the dam provides a safe vantage point to take in sweeping views of both the Upper and Lower Ord River. Interpretive displays offer insights into the dam’s impressive engineering and highlight the deep cultural connection the Miriwoong people share with this important waterway.

Access to the viewing area is via the Lions Park turnoff, 1 kilometre west of the dam. The site is only a few minutes drive from the centre of Kununurra.
