Hume Shire Council was named after the early explorer Hamilton Hume, who together with William Hovell made the first recorded crossing of the Murray River in 1824. Towns and villages emerged within the Shire, the largest of which are Howlong and Jindera. Other smaller towns include Brocklesby, Burrumbuttock, Gerogery and Lake Hume Village.
The Hume Shire offers trout fishing, swimming in the Murray River, feeding the animals at the wildlife park, shopping, visiting art galleries and great cafes and restaurants. The area is popular for its large blocks of residential land, affordable housing, quality services and business opportunities.
