Edithburgh Tidal Pool

Sports and Recreation Facilities

Although currently closed due to the algal bloom and some storm damage, Edithburgh Tidal Pool remains one of the town’s most iconic attractions: a safe, scenic, and historic place to enjoy the water.

Its story dates back to the 1880s, when mixed bathing was not permitted. The first tidal pool, built on the southern side of the jetty, was reserved for ladies. Later, a second pool was constructed for men. With the jetty often busy as a bustling port, these pools offered a safe and reliable alternative for swimming. Over time, the men’s pool became the main public facility, and it continues to serve swimmers to this day.

One of the pool’s most eye-catching features is its surrounding mural, painted by local artist Darryl Lewis. Depicting colourful marine and bird life, it adds a vibrant artistic touch to the site and celebrates Edithburgh’s coastal charm.

The pool has been upgraded several times over the years, with improved access, facilities, and plenty of open lawn space perfect for picnics, family gatherings, or simply relaxing by the water. It is also a popular venue for Vacswim lessons, helping generations of locals and visitors gain water confidence.

When the tidal pool reopens, it will once again be a place where history, community, and leisure meet – the perfect spot for a refreshing dip in a truly unique setting.
