The Channel Museum showcases the history and heritage of D’Entrecasteaux Channel area of Southern Tasmania. Over 24 individual displays depict the exploration, settlement, industries and social life of the region.
Located at Margate, just 20 kilometers south of Hobart, the Channel Museum is an award winning must see stop on your travels around Southern Tasmania’s region and has excellent visitor ratings on Trip Advisor and Google.
The Channel Museum caters for locals, individual tourists and tour groups, cruise ship groups, school groups and special interest groups. There are ample on-site parking spaces and easy access for elderly and disabled visitors. Companion card accepted.
The facility comprises a modern, purpose-built museum and library / reading room that explores all aspects of the history and heritage of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel area. There is also an outstanding collection of cameras and photographic equipment.
The gallery showcases the work of local artists and organisations, in-house special occasion displays and traveling exhibitions. The gallery display changes monthly and the displayed artwork is often for sale.
The Museum has a small gift shop selling local handcrafts and books of local interest.
The cafe serves delicious snacks, meals, and drinks made on-site from local ingredients where possible. It serves great coffee.
