Budj Bim Cultural Landscape is a must visit place. Tours, that are led by traditional owner guides describe how Gunditjmara people worked the land and environment of the southwest region of Victoria, to create a sustainable living environment that has endured for over 30000 years.

Budj Bim Cultural Landscape Tourism offers visitors a first-hand experience of Southwest Victoria’s Gunditjmara Country, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 2019, for its outstanding universal values.

The First Nation’s owned and operated company provides guided tours of the landscape, where visitors can learn the fascinating history of Budj Bim and beyond– from the creation of the landscape to present times.

The Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre brings to life ancient freshwater eel farming techniques practiced by Gunditjmara people for thousands of years, the cafés signature dish is the Kooyang (eel) tasting board and there is also a seasonal menu available, there is also a selection of retail items in the cafe that can be purchased.

A Gunditjmara guide leads an informative tour starting at Tae Rak (Lake Condah). The lake comprises of 1,700 hectares of significant wetlands and stony rises right next to the historic lava flows of Budj Bim National Park.

The tour starts at the eel tank and looks at the lifecycle of the eel and the part it plays in the Gunditjmara story. Then a short walk to the front of the lake where your guide will give you an overview of the Gunditjmara creation story and point out the extensive marine and birdlife of the lake. A short drive to one of their other three sites completes the tour.

You will learn about culturally significant flora and fauna, and the Tae Rak landscape, The Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre and the Gunditjmara people, introduction to traditional kooyang (eel) harvesting and processing, Stone country and Kooyang traps and the network of aquaculture systems designed to trap and harvest Kooyang for food and trade.

Tours finish back at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre and Café.

The half day tour starts at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre where you will be greeted by your guide and they will outline your day. The sites that could be visited are Kurtonij IPA, Tyrendarra IPA or Budj Bim National Park. Morning tea will be served out on country

After Budj Bim, return to the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre and Café.

Participants have the option to join the Guided Cultural Walk of Tae Rak (Lake Condah) at an additional cost.

This tour takes visitors through the history of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape from creation to farming. Visit Kurtonitj IPA, Budj Bim National Park, Lake Gorrie and Tae Rak, showcasing the living Indigenous culture and landscape through Gunditjmara eyes. Enjoy morning tea out on country

Enjoy lunch at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre followed by a two hour guided walk of Tae Rak (Lake Condah).
