Mistake Billabong

National Parks and Reserves

About an hour’s drive from Darwin, Mistake Billabong is a tranquil and scenic spot within Mary River National Park, known for its expansive floodplains and incredible wildlife viewing.

Wander along the boardwalk to the viewing platform or settle into the bird hide to observe the private lives of some of the Top End’s most colourful birdlife. This is one of the few permanent water bodies accessible year-round, attracting thousands of migratory birds, as well as wallabies, floodplain monitors, and crocodiles.

Mistake Billabong is ideal for birdwatching, nature photography, and quiet contemplation. The broader national park also offers opportunities for camping, picnicking and walking—so base yourself and start exploring.

Campsites must be booked and paid for online before you arrive. Purchase an NT Parks Visitor Pass before you arrive. NT residents are exempt.
