Great Artesian Basin Interpretive Centre
Things To Do Miles, Western Downs, Queensland
The Great Artesian Basin Interpretive Centre is one of the Miles Historical Village Museum’s key attractions, a modern and contemporary display telling stories of the Ancient Guardians and their connection to the land; the formation of the Artesian Basin- its geology and the life that it provides the region from Agriculture through to Industry (Mining, Energy and Coal Seam Gas); Early Pioneering- the challenges and finding of groundwater; as well as exploring Environmental Change.
These stories are shared using a variety of methods from; objects and collection items; large Graphic Text/Image Panels through to Videography in the modern mini theatrette.
Within this centre an amazing new display showcasing the First Nations Gallery. This gallery adds an interpretive layer, sharing the stories and experiences of First Nations People, aimed at informing and engaging guests while deepening their appreciation and understanding of the history of the Western Downs.
This collection forms one of the significant collections of the Miles & District Historical Society Inc serving as an inspirational historical link to the local indigenous communities, featuring items that are both rare and notable. Many of these artefacts hold local and state significance, while some are nationally and internationally important.
This project was managed with the cultural support of the Iman Wardinggari Board and the Gunggari Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTC.
